It is a commonly held perception that politics has gotten nastier in this country as time has gone by. But I have studied American history and political history very thoroughly. Believe me when I say that the sophistry and the rhetoric and the downright nastiness of it all have actually gotten a little better over the past 239 years. What was said about Bush, while often legitimate, is no less nasty and no less legitimate than what is said of Obama. The problem is that it is all rhetoric for rhetoric's sake. Nobody listens to one another, they just wait for their opportunity to be heard. Every president that has served since Washington, with only a few exceptions, should have been impeached and most of the members that have ever served in congress should have been imprisoned. But that did not happen and it will not happen. The federal government holds all the cards now and a particularly weak congress has allowed the presidency to absorb so much power that the balance of powers no longer exists. It is going to be very scary seeing where it goes from here. The sooner the whole thing collapses, the better for us all...!!!
